Terzo Paradiso, Rebirth-day Project
Karma Barnes is a Third Paradise Ambassador, connected with Michelangelo Pistoletto and Cittadellarte – Fondazione Pistoletto, Italy. Barnes’ involvement with the international Third Paradise / Rebirth-day project extends over more than a decade through artistic projects, exhibitions and social practice initiatives across Australia, Aotearoa New Zealand and internationally.
Earlier projects developed through Barnes’ Imagine the Land Project were presented within Third Paradise contexts at the Louvre Museum, Paris (2013); Havana, Cuba (2017); YARAT Contemporary Art Centre, Baku, Azerbaijan (2018); and the Third Paradise Panel for the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development at MACRO Asilo, Rome (2019).
In 2024, Barnes returned to Italy to participate in the UNIDEE Residency Program at Cittadellarte – Fondazione Pistoletto, Biella, supported by Cittadellarte and the Australian Regional Arts Fund. Representing Australia/Aotearoa New Zealand as a Third Paradise Ambassador, she developed Everything is Made of Everything Remaining and Filo di Terra e Speranza (Thread of Earth and Hope) within the framework of her ongoing ecological and installation practice.
Developed in dialogue with curator Francesco Saverio Teruzzi and through engagement with Michelangelo Pistoletto’s cast-iron processes, the works brought biomimetic sculptural forms, site-responsive earth materials and durational processes into conversation with the Third Paradise philosophy of restoring balance between natural and human-made systems.
Barnes continues her role as a Third Paradise Ambassador, maintaining an active and ongoing engagement with Cittadellarte and the international Third Paradise network through her artistic practice and international projects.
