Karma Barnes offers one-on-one mentoring for emerging and early career artists seeking to deepen their practice, expand conceptual clarity and navigate professional pathways within contemporary art contexts.

Drawing on an interdisciplinary practice spanning installation, material research, and participatory work, alongside experience across exhibitions, residencies and international biennales, these sessions provide tailored, in-depth support aligned to each artist’s direction and goals.

What Mentoring Can Support

Sessions are responsive and can include:

Development of artistic process and material exploration
Conceptual development and strengthening thematic frameworks
Critical feedback on existing work
Scaling work from studio to exhibition context

Exhibition planning, touring logistics and professional pathways
Documentation, proposals, and positioning within contemporary art contexts

This is a space for rigorous discussion, practical guidance and honest, constructive feedback.

Format

Sessions are one hour and can take place:

In person at Karma’s studio in Mullumbimby, Northern Rivers, NSW
Online via Zoom
Studio visits (by arrangement, as part of extended mentoring programs.

Mentoring Options

Mentoring can be structured to suit your needs, including:

One-off sessions
Monthly sessions (3-month, 6-month, or 12-month programs)

Fee

$120 per hour
Payment is made via secure payment link prior to the session.

Getting Started

To begin, you will be asked to provide a short outline of your current practice and what you would like to gain from mentoring. This helps shape sessions to be focused, relevant, and aligned with your goals.

Terms and Conditions

A minimum of 24 hours’ notice is required for cancellations or rescheduling
After two cancellations or rescheduled sessions, a 50% cancellation fee will apply to subsequent changes
Sessions must be paid in advance to confirm booking
Mentoring is tailored to individual needs; outcomes will vary depending on engagement and goals
